Barons at Sandown Park, Esher on 19 April 2011
|1969 Jaguar E-type S2 4.2 FHC: £26,000 - 30,000|
As one of its ‘Jaguar Heritage’ sales, Barons' next event has many examples of the Coventry manufacturer’s cars; it’s not all E-types and Mk2s, though, as proven by the 1996 Bentley Continental R and the 1993 Aston Martin Virage Volante.
The entries are still coming in – so do check regularly on www.barons-auctions.com – but for those looking for an affordable E-type in which to celebrate the model’s 50th birthday, Sandown Park on April 19 (with a preview on April 18) could well be the place to start.
So far, out of the 20 Jaguars in the provisional lot list, six are E-types, split 50:50 between S2s and V12-engined SIIIs. While ‘flat-floor’, early 3.8 Roadsters are rapidly becoming the province of the wealthier collector, an S2 coupé presents a very viable, stylish, yet practical alternative: cars such as the light blue 1969 example (£26,000 - 30,000) that not only featured in the June 1970 issue of Motor magazine, but was also in the long-term ownership of 60s model Karen Young.
|1961 Jaguar Mk IX: £10,000 - 12,000||1948 Jaguar 3.5 Litre Drophead Coupé: £90,000 - 120,000|
There’s also a rare colour (Rolls-Royce Pearl Black Metallic) 1969 S2 Fixed-head Coupé which is described as “not been offered on the open market for over 21 years”. £23,000 – 27,000 will buy you this car or, if an open ‘E’ is more to your liking, Barons has a manual 1974 Series III Roadster in the classic colour combination of Primrose Yellow with black interior for £25,000 - 35,000.
E-types apart, other Jaguars to be offered at Sandown Park include a “simply outstanding”, concours-level 1948 3.5 Litre DHC (£90,000 - 120,000), a two-tone grey 1961 Mk IX Saloon (with 4.2 engine, auto 'box and bucket seats for £10,000 – 12,000) and, for the man who has everything, a 1959 Mk IX.
|1993 Aston Martin Virage Volante: £28,000 - 34,000||1969 Jaguar E-type S2 4.2 FHC: £23,000 - 27,000|
Mind you, it’s not just ANY old Mk IX as, after an £85,000 rebuild, this one packs a 6.0 V12. £50,000 - 60,000 is the estimate, and I’d like to see the look on a Surrey BMW M3 driver's face when this one is driven back on the M25...
In the ‘Classic and Collectors’ section of the sale, Classic Driver readers will appreciate the 1993 Aston Martin Virage Volante (British Racing Green/Saddle leather for £28,000 – 34,000) and the 1996 Bentley Continental R, a 60,000 (warranted) miles car in Royal Blue for £25,000 – 28,000.
|1996 Bentley Continental R: £25,000 - 28,000|
There are also a couple of Rolls, a 1979 Shadow II in Oyster Gold with a factory sunroof for £6000 – 8000, and a 1981 Silver Spirit, in Garnet, for just £5250 – 6500.
