In the early and mid-1970s, Swiss watchmaking underwent a sea of changes in the design and marketing of their wristwatches. Within a short period of time, several “luxury sports” watches were designed and produced.

Vacheron Constantin responded in 1977, launching the 222. Unlike the previous three watches, which had all been designed by Gérald Genta, the Royal Oak, the Ingenieur and the Nautilus, Vacheron Constantin turned to young designer Jörg Hysek, who would later work on the Phidias and the Overseas for the brand. He used some of the basic building blocks of the previous three watches – an integrated, flat-link bracelet, ultra-thin tonneau case, and a screw-down bezel increasing water resistance.

Within the 222 lies the ultra-thin, automatic calibre 1121, Vacheron Constantin’s version of the renewned Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 920 used in the earliest Patek Philippe Nautilus models and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak “Jumbo”. The scalloped bezel and the hexagonal flat links of the bracelet, as well as the small Maltese cross inset to the case differentiate the design of the 222 from its luxury sports watch brethren. Produced for only seven years, with a total of 500 pieces made in all metal and dial combinations, the 222 commemorated the 22 nd anniversary of Vacheron Constantin.

This is a rare opportunity to buy a spectacular collector piece produced in less than 500 pieces in all metal combinations, the stainless steel version is far the rarest one.

Au début et au milieu des années 1970, l'horlogerie suisse a connu une série de changements dans la conception et la commercialisation de leurs montres-bracelets. En peu de temps, plusieurs montres de "luxe sportif" ont été conçues et produites.

Vacheron Constantin a répondu en 1977 en lançant la 222. Contrairement aux trois montres précédentes, toutes conçues par Gérald Genta, la Royal Oak, l'Ingenieur et la Nautilus, Vacheron Constantin s'est tourné vers le jeune designer Jörg Hysek, qui travaillerait plus tard sur la Phidias et l'Overseas pour la marque. Il a utilisé certains des éléments de base des trois montres précédentes : un bracelet intégré à maillons plats, un boîtier tonneau ultra-fin et une lunette vissée pour une meilleure résistance à l'eau.

La 222 abrite le calibre automatique ultra-fin 1121, la version de Vacheron Constantin du célèbre calibre 920 de Jaeger-LeCoultre utilisé dans les premiers modèles de Patek Philippe Nautilus et l'Audemars Piguet Royal Oak "Jumbo". La lunette festonnée et les maillons plats hexagonaux du bracelet, ainsi que la petite croix de Malte incrustée sur le boîtier, différencient la conception de la 222 de ses homologues de montres de sport de luxe. Produite pendant seulement sept ans, avec un total de 500 pièces fabriquées dans toutes les combinaisons de métaux et de cadrans, la 222 a commémoré le 22e anniversaire de Vacheron Constantin.
