Rolex Submariner 5512
SN 765,18x
Circa 1962
Cornino case with strong lugs and chamfers. The interlug space shows the regular rubbing from bracelet. Serial number is perfectly visible under magnification.
Rolex completed an overhaul in the 1970s, with Rolex replacing the caseback, hands, crown, and dial, which are original and later service compared to the case.
This Submariner’s 1570 movement is in good working condition, and keeping accurate time. However, we did not revise it and can’t guarantee it’s mechanical condition.
Dial is in excellent condition, of later service type, untouched, unaltered, non relumed. Hour tritium plots have aged to a warm and pleasing sandy huey. Tritium does not react to UV light (as expected).
Rotating bezel is original, not changed, visible by the deep indentation.
Cristal is a T19 dome, new without scratches.
Caseback stamped 5512 (service type).
Hands are later service replacement, tritium, non glowing under UV as should be.
Crown is Rolex 703, Rolex service replacement.
Insert has fat fonts, of Mk3 typo, with some serif on the letters, typical of the 1970s inserts.
Please do check carefully the pictures, that are an integral part of this Submariner’s description.
History of the 5512
In 1959, Rolex introduced their latest dive watch with the Submariner 5512. This model was to replace the preceding Submariner 5510 and Submariner 6538. Among other things, the biggest change the ref. 5512 brought to the Submariner collection was the inclusion of crown guards. Since the Submariner was built as a tool watch to be used underwater by divers, Rolex was always looking to make the watch tougher and more resilient to external conditions. Therefore, the crown guards would beef up the Submariner and prevent possible damage to the winding crown.
Another major improvement brought by the 5512 was a chronometer grade movement, more precise than the movement of the 5510, 6538 and 5513.
The Submariner 5512 remained in production until about 1978, thereby making it one of the longest-running Rolex sports watch references to date. During its 20-year history, the Sub 5512 has undergone plenty of modifications and improvements and today, it continues to be a very popular vintage Rolex Submariner to collect. This watch is for sale on Catawiki.
