Beschreibung

Guide price: £25000 - £30000.

UK-supplied, RHD, 2.2-litre, Quattro finished in Mars Red with Dark Brown leather

Put into storage by the previous owner in 1989. Now recommissioned rather than restored

An amazingly original car. Great history, it had its first MoT in 30 years this February

Quattro values have moved sensationally recently and this one looks sure to do the same

Audi's Quattro is a legend that re-wrote the form book in International Rallying, as well as causing rival manufacturers to rethink their offerings and was, quite literally, a trailblazer. The story began with Audi chassis engineer Jorg Bensinger, who spent a Finnish winter testing the Volkswagen Iltis - a four-wheel drive West German military and forest service vehicle - and found it could outperform all other machines on snow, whatever their type or power output. He put the idea of a four-wheel drive version of the Audi 80 Coupe to the company's hierarchy and, well, you know the rest.

The resulting model was launched to great excitement at the 1980 Geneva Salon and then released to European customers later the same year. It was initially powered a 2144cc in-line, five-cylinder, 10-valve SOHC unit with turbocharger and intercooler. This was the first time the mass car market had been introduced to the intoxicating combination of turbo power and four-wheel drive, and the results were spectacular. The car's effect on the world of rallying is well documented and was well and truly game-changing

During its production cycle, what enthusiasts now refer to as the 'Ur' (original) Quattro enjoyed two engine upgrades and continuous development, but the basic concept never changed and even the outward appearance altered very little. Boasting its own dedicated assembly line and crew, some 11,452 examples are understood to have been completed between 1980 and 1991.

The Mars Red, 1983 Quattro offered here has been enjoyed by four previous owners the last of which bought the car in 1989. He had recently started up his sports car related business in Bristol and had a number of cars at his disposal, so when the Audi's MoT ran out, he decided to put it into storage where it was to remain for some time. During this period he had some paintwork carried out but the car was never used or put back on the road. When, some years later, he sold his business and relocated to Scotland, the Quattro was transported in a covered lorry and again put into storage along with some other classics until 2017. Unfortunately, a long-term family illness required the release of some funds so he made the decision to sell the car he had owned for the best part of 30 years.

Our vendor continues the story “I then bought the car and was very pleased with its general condition mainly down to the fact it had been carefully stored for so long and had never seen a salty road. The car was in such good original condition I decided to not restore it but rather carry out a recommission replacing all perishable items brakes bearings, clutch, master and slave cylinder, engine- gearbox and diff mounts etc. basically anything it needed to make road legal and useable but retaining as much originality as possible. All parts used were bought from Pete at Quattro Corner. I then took it for an MoT for the first time since 1988 on 1st of February 2018 at 78,187miles and it passed with no advisories. I have since driven the car on dry days only and covered approx 800 miles.”

The Audi will be accompanied by the original V5, the new style V5, MoT Certificates from 1987 (66,341) and 1988 (75,285), its current MoT, and invoices from the recent recommission. Our vendor has two other Ur Quattros and has decided to let this one go to a new owner to cherish and use. A car this original is hard to find, and we are sure this sparkling Quattro will fit in well in any collection of 80's classics.
