The Model: In progression from the popular “600” series Fiat introduced the larger displacement “850” series in 1964. Developed under the project number “100” the new 850 was produced 34 HP in stock form with a performance version rated at 37 HP. After Carlos Abarth added a few tricks such as improved carburetion, tuned exhaust, front disc brakes, plus a few tricks to the suspension, the little family sedan was ready to take on all challengers on most any road rally course, as this little wonder now officially rated at 43 HP. Over its lifetime the Fiat 850 sold quite well with a relatively small group receiving the Abarth touch. With numerous wins credited to this perky little sports sedan, it is no wonder that today these are highly sought after, not only as a collector vehicle but as active participants in vintage rally events.

The Car: Treated to a fairly recent cosmetic restoration this burgundy coupe features fresh graphics and sit level. Even with a bit of road rally experience in its background this example retains its original sheet metal and presents itself quite well, considering many of these car were often fixed or repairs so many times as to be unrecognizable in their stock form. The doors open and close easily and while the engine bay is tidy it is not antiseptic. The engine starts with ease and once the shifting pattern has been memorized, going through the gears is a snap. If you’re looking for luxury in the passenger compartment, this car might not be your cup of tea, for it has been built to be a driver’s dream. While it presents well as a race-ready Fiat, this car would be more comfortable on the track where it could unleash the Scorpion’s sting.
