Mercedes-Benz took a controlling stake in AMG towards the end of 1999, cementing a partnership that had led to the creation of some of the most powerful and exciting automobiles to ever wear the Three-Pointed Star. The strive towards total performance would eventually lead to the creation of a special range of lightened and tuned two-door models that would be dubbed Black Series.

Launched in 2008, the SL 65 AMG Black Series was based on the R230-generation SL Class and featured a 6.0-litre V-12, boasting an extra 57 brake horsepower over a standard SL 65. The resultant 661 brake horsepower made it the most powerful AMG at time of launch, with an impressive 0 to 100 km/h time of just 3.8 seconds and electronically limited top speed of 320 km/h.

The car offered here was completed by the factory on 25 June 2009 and delivered via Wiesenthal, the official Mercedes-Benz dealer in Vienna, to its first and only owner, residing in Austria. The coupé, thought to be one of only four examples delivered new to Austria, was configured in Iridium Silver with a metallic finish, complemented by a Black and Anthracite interior trimmed in the desirable Exclusive Leather package. The car boasted an impressive options list from new, being equipped with an AMG Performance Steering Wheel, Premium Sound System, and selected interior trim finished in Carbon High Gloss. In April 2023, after 12 years in storage, the SL 65 AMG was subject to €11,929 of servicing with the fitment of new tyres at Heinrich Brammen, the authorised Mercedes-Benz service workshop in Baden, near Vienna.
