Alfa Romeo’s Bertone-styled Giulietta Sprint Coupe debuted at Torino in April 1954, powered by a 1.3-liter, all-alloy version of Alfa’s classic twin-cam, four-cylinder engine designed by former Ferrari engineer Giuseppe Busso. The model was an instant success, and there was an immediate demand for a high-performance version, so the more sporting Veloce model was introduced for 1956. For those seeking even more outright speed and race-winning capability, a lightweight variant was introduced. The Alleggerita (lightweight) was about 150 pounds lighter than the standard Sprint Veloce, featuring plexiglass side and rear windows, as well as aluminum doors, hood, bumpers, and trunk lid. Incredibly nimble, these cars were raced with great success in period, achieving impressive finishes at legendary events like the 1000 Miglia and Targa Florio.
This fantastic example was originally manufactured in December 1956 and delivered to Sig. Felipe Antonio of Casablanca, Morocco, in January 1957, and finished in blue. The Sprint later returned to Europe, and restoration work was performed from 2011 to 2013 by Italian specialists, including the renowned firm Quality Cars S.R.L., known for producing some of the finest show-winning restorations in the world. The current owner has admired Giuliettas since he was a young boy growing up in Italy, and he acquired this rare Alfa Romeo in 2017. He has subsequently enjoyed the Alleggerita on the road, and in 2019 his son drove the car on the exclusive 1000 Miglia Storica and successfully completed the famous event.
With its two-tone gray and blue interior, Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel, and Marchal fog lamps, the Alfa Romeo possesses a sporting and purposeful appearance. The car is accompanied by restoration photos, its ACI, 1000 Miglia, and Royal Automotible Club of Morocco badges, as well as its FIVA Identity Card carrying the desirable A/3 designation. The Alleggerita is also documented by correspondence with Alfa Romeo Storico, and the consignor notes that the Alfa Romeo records show this Sprint’s original engine number as 30258, whereas the engine in the car is numbered 30259, suggesting perhaps a clerical recordkeeping error; consequently, the engine in the car may be the unit, but it cannot be verified. It is also important to note that the Alleggerita version is identified by the Bertone body number stamped in the front scuttle, which starts with a 77-prefix followed by a three digit number referring to the build sequence, in this case, 239.
This lightweight Giulietta Sprint Veloce, with its pre-1957 build date, is eligible for some of the most exclusive motoring events worldwide and has already been proven on the challenging 1000 Miglia Storica. It has received restoration work by one of the most highly regarded firms in the world, Quality Cars S.R.L., and today remains a beautiful representation of Alfa Romeo’s brilliant engineering. This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a rare example of one of the best driving sports cars of the 1950s.
*Please note that this vehicle has been accepted to the Mille Miglia’s Warm Up USA Event in November 2023, subject to registration and payment of entry fee.
