For many enthusiasts, the driver’s choice of Ferrari’s 250 GT range is the later, second-series variant from 1960 and onwards. These boast major improvements over earlier cars, including revised shock absorbers, better sound insulation, overdrive transmission, all-round disc brakes, and the new “outside-plug” Tipo 128F engine, rated at 236 brake horsepower. Among the fastest grand touring cars of their era, these 250 GT Series II Coupés were claimed by Ferrari to reach 100 km/h in under seven seconds—thereby outpacing contemporary models from Aston Martin, Jaguar, Maserati, and Mercedes-Benz,.
As noted by marque historian Marcel Massini, chassis 1873 GT is the 33rd-to-last 250 GT Coupé produced, and it was purchased new on 23 May 1960 by a property developer from Milan, Italy. Promptly registered as “MI 483965”, chassis 1873 GT remained within the care of its first owner until 28 September 1965, when it was sold to a Florentine enthusiast and registered as “FI 299448”. Passing through the hands of just one more owner in Florence, this fine 250 GT Series II was subsequently exported to the United States in the 1970s, and by 1979 it had reached its first place of extended residency with an enthusiast in California.
By 1999, the Ferrari’s long-term owner had entered it into dry storage. It appears to have been no worse for wear after this period of retirement, as it was brought to market in 2014, then exhibiting a well-preserved state. The car’s Nero Connolly leather upholstery exudes a handsome, characterful patina, while its Grigio paintwork proves a splendid complement to the Borrani wire wheels upon which the car rides. A gentleman’s Ferrari in every sense, this 250 GT Coupé with Pinin Farina coachwork is unlikely to ever go out of style. Quintessentially Italian, this particular Series II example would be a wonderful addition to any collection.
