It offered everything that was expected of a top model at the time. The press was thrilled about the suspension comfort and the road holding. The Gamma came standard with power steering, power-assisted disc brakes all around and a five-speed manual gearbox.

This Gamma Berlina is the version in “Grigio Escoli” Metallic with a red fabric interior. The car was delivered new in Marseille in 1977; the car doesn’t have any rust thanks to the southern French sun. The first owner didn't use the car much: the car had only driven 33,000 km when I bought it. After the owner's death, the family didn’t want to sell the car. Eventually they were willing to sell, the car was subsequently readied by a specialist in the Netherlands. Technically, the car is now fine and a modification has been made to the power steering pump, so that it is no longer driven by the timing belt.

By now, I have driven it a few thousand kilometres; the odometer reading is now approximately 35,000 kilometres. There are no maintenance invoices as evidence for the low mileage. And that makes sense because in Italy, and therefore probably also in the south of France, a service was often paid for in cash, without a receipt. But if you would look at the car when it is on a platform, and also see what the interior looks like after 42 years, then the mileage seems to be right. There is no damage in the interior. The red fabric upholstery is still very neat, it does have a few signs of age. The headlining is tight and there are hardly any rattles or squeaks perceptible while driving.

Of course, the car has signs of wear here and there and small parking dents. Not illogical given its age. And besides, it's an old car that hasn't been restored. There is probably a small leak in the exhaust, which you sometimes do and sometimes don't notice in the interior. If engine and gearbox are cold, shifting to second gear requires a little more effort; when it’s warmed up, shifting is easy. The car brakes and steers properly, temperature and oil pressure are good. While starting the vehicle, you sometimes see a small blue plume of smoke, but that is normal for a flat engine.

This is a great opportunity for the real enthusiast!

The car is in Hilversum, the Netherlands.
