In the mid-1950s, the Motogiro d’Italia, a 1,000-mile race around Italy, attracted as much attention as the Tour de France did for cycling fans. As many as 50 manufacturers competed, and fans flocked to the course, very likely on bikes like this 125-cc four-stroke MV Agusta Centomila, which was first built as the Turismo Rapido in 1954. Since the revival of the Motogiro d’Italia in 2001, the largest class of entries includes bikes that were built in the years when the race was most hotly contested or bikes that were continuation models, dating back to the correct period. The Motogiro d’Italia was cancelled in 1957 when Fon de Portago’s fatal crash in the Mille Miglia led to a ban on road racing altogether. As a continuation model, this bike would seem to be eligible and merit an inquiry about its eligibility.
