HISTORY / DOCUMENTATION
This exceptional Citroën SM was originally delivered in California, making it part of the relatively small group of SMs exported to the United States at the time. The American specification is recognisable by various specific details and is now highly sought after by collectors. This is partly due to the sunny climate, which has helped to preserve the car in excellent condition. The car was imported to the Netherlands in 2020 and has been restored since then. Attention has been paid not only to the exterior but, above all, to the mechanical aspects. The restoration was carried out with the aim of ensuring the SM could be driven properly and reliably. This example has chassis number 00SB9552 and engine number C114/1 - 250.100. The car comes with comprehensive documentation of the work carried out. In 2024, the SM was valued at €72,000. Spare parts are included with the car, as are the original Californian number plates. An interesting detail is the combination of the early SB bodywork with the American specification and the automatic transmission.
EXTERIOR
During the restoration, the bodywork was repainted in the highly distinctive Bronze Foncé Metallic, a colour that beautifully complements the SM’s extravagant character. The long, low body, the streamlined shape and the fully integrated lighting mean the SM remains one of the most recognisable designs of the 1970s. The design originated from Citroën’s styling department under the leadership of Robert Opron. Its aerodynamics are particularly noteworthy: the SM was designed not only to be beautiful, but also to cut efficiently through the air at high speeds. The European version featured an automatic headlamp swivel system; the American models had a different headlamp configuration due to regulations at the time. The windows, rubber seals, chrome trim and alloy wheels are all in good condition, with signs of wear consistent with the car’s age.
INTERIOR
The interior is fitted with new brown leather, giving the SM a particularly luxurious and atmospheric feel. A radio is fitted in the centre console. The interior is in good condition, with signs of wear consistent with the car’s age. The cockpit is typically Citroën: futuristic, asymmetrical and strongly driver-focused. The instruments and controls have clearly been designed with the idea that an SM should be more than just a fast car. The car features, amongst other things, electric windows and air conditioning. The air conditioning was recharged in 2023.
TECHNICAL
Under the bonnet lies the famous Maserati V6 engine, making the SM, from a technical perspective, a truly unique combination of French and Italian engineering. The engine has been fully overhauled. Various vulnerable Maserati components have also been addressed: parts have been overhauled or replaced with improved versions, with the aim of enhancing the car’s reliability and practicality. The gearbox has been replaced and the braking system has been fully overhauled. One of the SM’s most distinctive technical features is its hydropneumatic suspension system. This system, derived from Citroën technology, provides the characteristic ‘floating’ ride comfort. The car’s entire hydropneumatic system was completely overhauled during the restoration. The steering is also distinctive: the SM utilised Citroën’s DIRAVI system, a speed-sensitive hydraulic power steering system with automatic return to the straight-ahead position. This was highly advanced for the early 1970s. The car drives well and has been technically built with practical use in mind. A service was carried out at 55,100 miles.
GENERAL
When it was launched in 1970, the Citroën SM was one of the most technically advanced cars in the world. Citroën combined its own revolutionary hydropneumatic technology with a Maserati V6 engine, following its acquisition of Maserati in 1968. The result was an exceptional GT: as comfortable as a Citroën, technically advanced and imbued with the character of an Italian sports car. Of the approximately 12,900 SMs produced, only a relatively small proportion were exported to the United States. The name SM is generally interpreted as ‘Série Maserati’. With its aerodynamic bodywork, front-wheel drive and Maserati engine, the SM was a technical marvel in its day and ranked among the fastest front-wheel-drive cars in the world. The car was also so special that Johan Cruijff, amongst others, drove one. The SM was praised not only for its speed, but above all for the combination of high performance and exceptional comfort that made it ideal for covering long distances.

GESCHICHTE / DOKUMENTATION
