Max Hoffman, the highly influential importer of European cars into the United States, persuaded Alfa Romeo to produce Spider versions of its highly acclaimed Giulietta Sprint, a model celebrated as much for its elegant, graceful lines as for its formidable competition record, with class victories at the Mille Miglia, the Tour de France Automobile and the 1,000 km of Nürburgring, among other notable achievements.
While Franco Scaglione penned the Giulietta Sprint coupé for Bertone, Alfa Romeo turned to Pininfarina for the Spider. Power came from a front-mounted, longitudinally installed 1,290-cc inline-four producing 65 PS. As with the Giulietta Sprint, a more potent Veloce version of the Spider was also offered. Equipped with twin Weber 40 DCO3 carburetors and a higher compression ratio, it delivered a top speed of 180 km/h, compared with 165 km/h for the standard model.
Built in May 1957 and shipped to New York through Max Hoffman, who had committed to purchasing an initial batch of 2,500 cars, this early 750F Spider Veloce is undoubtedly one of those cars. Repatriated to Italy in the early twenty-first century, the car underwent a comprehensive restoration, returning to its original factory-finish Nero black paintwork and receiving a correct-type engine as confirmed by its Alfa Romeo-issued Certificato di Origine. In 2014, it was registered in Italy by its owner, who retained the car until 2021, when it was acquired by its current owner who imported the Spider Veloce into Switzerland and entered it in The ICE in 2022, the prestigious automotive gathering held each winter in St. Moritz.
