Beschreibung

William I'Anson Ltd are proud to annouce for sale the Ex-Rob Walker Racing Team, Sir Stirling Moss and Maurice Trintignant, 1958 Monaco Grand Prix Winning, Cooper-Climax T45 Formula 1 and Formula 2.

Very few cars can boast such a prolific and impressive racing career as this fabulous car. In 1958 and 1959 alone, it took 10 podium finishes. These included seven wins for Sir Stirling Moss, two in Formula 1 and five in Formula 2. A further victory for Maurice Trintignant came in the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix, making F2-9-58 a unique and extremely important piece of motor racing history as the first rear-engined Grand Prix car to win the Monaco Grand Prix.

Its significance extends far beyond the position of its engine. F2-9-58 demonstrated that a light, simple and efficient car could overcome far greater engine power and engineering sophistication. Its Monaco victory helped shape the future direction of Formula 1.

Supplied new in early 1958 to the most famous and successful privateer team of its time, the R.R.C. Walker Racing Team, F2-9-58 was modified by Walker’s chief mechanic, Alf Francis. It was fitted with a unique 2,015 cc FPF engine, the largest-capacity FPF that Coventry Climax had yet produced.

A formidable competitor from the outset, F2-9-58 won at Aintree on its debut with Stirling Moss, before Maurice Trintignant took the car to its historic and game-changing Monaco Grand Prix victory. Between 1958 and 1961, F2-9-58 achieved 10 victories and at least 17 podium finishes across Formula 1, Formula 2 and hill climbs. Seven of its victories were achieved with Stirling Moss.

In 1959, Moss chose the proven F2-9-58 over Walker’s Cooper-BRM at Monaco. He put the car on pole and led convincingly before gearbox failure denied him victory.

During a remarkable four-season career, it competed with Climax, Borgward and Maserati engines, ERSA and Colotti gearboxes, and several styles of bodywork.

With Trintignant in 1960, the hard-used chassis remained highly competitive against newer machinery. It achieved podium finishes at Syracuse, Brussels and Pau, won the Prix de Paris and the Mont Ventoux Hill Climb and remained competitive through to 1961.

Following its period racing career, F2-9-58 was sold by Scuderia Serenissima to Swiss collector Pierre de Siebenthal in 1964, remaining with him for over three decades. It was subsequently acquired by Jean-Pierre Boss in 1997 and Chris Lunn in 2011, before passing to its current custodian in 2019.

Between 1999 and 2000, F2-9-58 was restored to its 1958 Rob Walker specification for Jean-Pierre Boss by John Harper, with assistance from Oliver Crosthwaite. It was reunited with Maurice Trintignant at the 2000 Grand Prix Historique de Monaco.

F2-9-58 has since been meticulously maintained and actively raced by its current custodian. It is accompanied by a remarkable and extensive history file, which includes original documents associated with Rob Walker Racing, together with a current FIA HTP.

This remarkable car opens the door to many of the world’s most prestigious historic racing events. For anyone with a passion for collecting, it can also sit proudly alongside some of the most important racing cars of all time.
