"With the success that the Fiat 500 was achieving in sales, it became imperative to produce other versions of the basic model, such as station wagons. However, there was a serious problem: the vertical engine. When Dante Giacosa designed the 500 Giardiniera, he already knew he would have this problem. He then remembered a horizontal engine that he had designed and developed two years earlier, to equip an Autobianchi Bianchina, which had never left the factory. It was a complete success. The Giardiniera's career lasted until 1977, with almost no changes, not even the famous "suicide doors."
