Beschreibung

The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL is one of the most enduring grand touring designs of the modern classic era, combining open top elegance, engineering depth and effortless V8 performance. In 500 SL form, it represented the top of the European R107 roadster range, and this particular car is especially attractive as a genuine 1982 500 SL, not to be confused with the later US market 560 SL.

About this 500 SL

This Mercedes-Benz 500 SL was first registered on 25.06.1982 and carries chassis number WDB10704612001654. The car is finished in elegant Silberblau Metallic, colour code 930U, and has covered 85,000 km. The accompanying historical sales document confirms the model as a 1982 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL, type 107, and records that it was imported from Switzerland in 1998, at which time the mileage was noted as 40,000 km. The same document records the original 1982 Danish price as DKK 734,000, underlining the exclusivity of the model when new.

A SKAT document confirms that veteran driving permission was added to the vehicle in the Danish Motor Register on 4 April 2018, and the later registration document confirms the model as Mercedes-Benz, 500, SL, with first registration date of 25.06.1982.

Exterior

The R107 shape is one of Mercedes-Benz’s most recognisable designs, and in Silberblau Metallic this 500 SL has precisely the restrained, technical elegance that suits the model. The colour gives the car a particularly period correct expression, subtle rather than loud, and very much in keeping with the flagship character of the European 500 SL. The documentation includes a rust protection record connected to registration number XE 55 797, noting treatment type C, described on the document as a two layer treatment. In January 2005, the car also received a documented double underbody treatment, together with exhaust related work.

Interior

The R107 cabin is defined by classic Mercedes-Benz ergonomics, solid materials and a driving position that suits both elegant cruising and long distance touring. The supplied documents do not specify the interior colour or full equipment list, so this section should be completed after a visual inspection of the upholstery, dashboard, wood trim, carpets, soft top and hardtop, if present. The documentation does, however, show continued care of functional details, including work on the motor antenna connection and reset of the CD unit in 2008.

Engine

The 500 SL is powered by Mercedes-Benz’s 4,973 cc V8 engine, here documented with 231 hp at 4,750 rpm and 405 Nm at 3,000 rpm. This is the defining feature of the model, giving the car the effortless character that separates it from the smaller engined R107 variants. A supplementary technical source for the 500 SL lists the same 4,973 cc V8 output of 231 PS at 4,750 rpm and 405 Nm at 3,000 rpm, along with a 4 speed automatic transmission. The old sales document also records the vehicle weight as 1,580 kg.

Service and maintenance

The car has been regularly maintained, and the documented services and repairs include:

01.2026 - mileage not stated - Four new Imperial All Season Driver 205 / 70 R14 tyres fitted, including balancing and wheel change.
03.2024 - 83,195 km - Oil service with oil filter, sump plug, 8 litres of motor oil, exhaust rubber mount, inspection before roadworthiness test and transport to inspection.

01.2005 - 48,937 km - Exhaust inspected, right front pipe repaired with plate, left front pipe welded, left door handle linkage corrected and double underbody treatment carried out.
01.2005 - 48,870 km - FDM maintenance test performed in Lyngby, noting the car as a 1982 Mercedes-Benz 500 with chassis number WDB10704612001654. The report noted items requiring attention, including brake fluid boiling point, middle exhaust leak, right front wheel bearing noise and rust protection renewal. The subsequent 2005 invoices document that the wheel bearing, brake fluid, exhaust attention and underbody protection were addressed.

Summary

This 500 SL brings together the most important qualities of the R107 series, elegant period colour, European 500 SL specification, low mileage and a strong file of service documentation. The paperwork shows a car that has been kept in long term use and care, with repeated oil services, brake work, exhaust work, electrical repairs, tyres, starter repair, underbody treatment and inspection related maintenance documented across the file.

Most importantly, this is the European 500 SL, the top of the line car of its period, powered by the 4,973 cc V8 and presented in the desirable Silberblau Metallic 930U. With 85,000 km, veteran status and a documented history from Switzerland to Denmark, it is a highly appealing example of one of Mercedes-Benz’s most confident classic roadsters.
