Beschreibung
“Berlina” means nothing more and nothing less than “saloon”. Unlike the Giulia, the four-door model unveiled in 1968 was not given a specific name, and the styling by Bertone was kept simple. Inside, however, the Giulia’s big sister impressed with plenty of space and greater comfort, without significantly compromising on sportiness. After production of the Alfa Romeo 2600 Berlina ceased in the autumn of 1969, the 1750 Berlina became Alfa Romeo’s largest saloon. In the spring of 1972, the Alfa Romeo Alfetta – a car of roughly the same size – was launched; both models were sold side by side for four years. Its bodywork had been designed by Bertone. The resemblance to the successful Giulia was unmistakable. The vehicle became more spacious thanks to a wheelbase extended by 60 mm and longer overhangs. Alfa Romeo had been offering the 1'779 cm³ engine in the Giulia GT since 1967, alongside the two four-cylinder engines with 1.3 and 1.6 litre capacities. The designation ‘1750’, derived from the unusually rounded displacement figure, was intended to evoke the famous pre-war 6C 1750 six-cylinder engine. The maximum engine power was 132 SAE hp. From the summer of 1971, the 1750 Berlina was replaced by the 2000 Berlina. The engine, which had been substantially redesigned and now had a displacement of 1'962 cm3, produced 150 SAE hp. The new engine also provided an opportunity to make subtle adjustments to the saloon’s exterior. The headlights were now all the same size, the Alfa badge was wider and the radiator grille was matt black. This Alfa Romeo 2000 Berlina was first registered on 28 September 1973 in the province of Lucca, Italy, where, according to the libretto, it had two owners before being imported into Switzerland in 2011. In 2015, the attractive saloon was acquired by a garage owner, who subsequently lovingly optimized and modified the car for use at historic events. Among other things, the Berlina was fitted with a stone guard for the oil pan, Bilstein shock absorbers on all wheels, and the braking system and cylinder head were overhauled. In addition, four alloy wheels in the period-correct Alfa Romeo GTA style were fitted. In 2022, the Alfa was acquired by its last owner, who enjoyed driving it until his passing and ensured it was constantly improved. The original steel wheels, which are also included, have been powder-coated and fitted with new tyres; the seats have been reupholstered; the propeller shaft has been overhauled; the second-gear synchronizer has been replaced; and the vehicle’s electrical system has been checked and repaired where necessary. Today, this beautiful Berlina is in good to very good condition and is ready to take part in the next event or to provide its new owner with enjoyable drives. The Alfa Romeo will be handed over with its latest veteran MOT completed in April 2022, meaning it can be registered immediately in most German-speaking cantons. The proceeds from the auction will go to Swiss Mountain Aid.
