History:
Presented in 1955 at the New York Auto Show, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL captured the spirit of the luxury roadster in a more accessible format than its bigger sister, the 300 SL. With its elegant Mercedes-Benz styling and refined 4-cylinder engine, it has become a benchmark among German classic convertibles of the 1950s-60s.
The current owner has had this 190 SL for over 20 years and already knew its previous owner, who had kept it for 30 years: the car's history is thus known over 50 years.
The invoice file goes back to 1990 and reflects careful upkeep. An appraisal carried out in 2024 by Classic Expert valued it at €128,000.
Condition:
This Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is in very good overall condition.
🚘 The body panel alignment is good, and the paint, redone in 2008, is well presented. The chrome (bumpers, star hubcaps, handles) is in good condition. The ivory-colored soft top presents very well. The owner has the matching hardtop, restored and very rarely used. The appropriate stand is included.
The cabin is trimmed in black leather, with a dashboard painted to match the bodywork, an original clock, and a period-correct radio. The seat cushions are in excellent condition, while the backrests show patina consistent with the car's age. Retractable seatbelts have been added, and the gauges are functional.
⚙️ The car is today in very good working order. Previous owners have always taken good care of it. Notable work carried out includes:
Between 1985 and 1990: Complete engine overhaul (block, head), brakes, shock absorbers, and gearbox;
09/2007: Suspension/steering restoration;
04/2010: Gearbox seals, bushings;
06/2013: Water pump overhaul;
05/2017: Cylinder head replacement (the current head accepts unleaded fuel), steering box overhaul;
03/2019 at 53,500 km - Weber carburetor service, full clutch replacement, complete rear axle and differential overhaul (epoxy treatment), replacement of all 4 shock absorbers, brake system overhaul;
09/2021 - Head gasket, thermostats;
07/2026 - ATE Hydrovac brake booster restoration.
The underbody is sound, having been properly treated in 2008.
