- Built for the 1977 racing season by privateer driver Wilhelm Schmid in collaboration with Kolender, then a chassis engineer at Porsche, the Schmid-Kolender 002/77 is a genuine prototype developed for Group 6 competition. Officially homologated on 9 March 1977 by the ONS, the German national motorsport authority of the period, it retains its original competition passport, which remains on file with the car today. Its chassis number, 002/77, confirms its status as the second known creation of the Schmid-Kolender partnership, already active in the field of sports-racing prototypes. Developed during the particularly innovative era of the Interserie championship, it perfectly illustrates the ingenuity of independent German constructors competing against the major factory-backed teams.
- The Schmid-Kolender 002/77 enjoyed a genuine period competition career. Its ONS passport confirms participation in several German hillclimb events during the late 1970s, while the various technical inspection stamps also record entries in competitions organised under the auspices of the ADAC. Period photographs preserved within the history file show the car carrying both Dinol Racing Oil and Willi Schmid Racing sponsorship liveries. The bodywork quickly evolved into a highly attractive design heavily inspired by the Martini Racing Porsche 936/77, winner of the 1977 24 Hours of Le Mans with Jürgen Barth, Hurley Haywood and Jacky Ickx. Measuring 2,000 mm in width, with an overall height of only 970 mm and a wheelbase of 2,250 mm, the car possesses an imposing presence while retaining the sleek proportions of a pure racing prototype.
- Constructed around a bespoke chassis and as documented within its history file, the SK 002 Turbo was initially fitted with a 2.1-litre turbocharged engine coupled to a magnesium-cased Type 915 gearbox before later receiving a naturally aspirated 2,992 cc Porsche flat-six (95 mm bore and 70.4 mm stroke) derived from the 911. Competition specifications included twin-plug Bosch ignition, slide-throttle carburettors, a competition fuel pump, a reduced-size cooling fan, a centre-forged camshaft, a lightweight intake manifold and a limited-slip differential. Following a number of mechanical issues, however, a 1,837 cc Ford-Cosworth four-cylinder engine was officially registered with the ONS. The car retains several highly desirable period competition components, including its magnesium gearbox casing, racing brake calipers, original ignition system and RSR-type ignition control units.
- Since its acquisition by the current owner in 2010, the Schmid-Kolender 002/77 has been fitted with a Porsche 964 M64/02 3.6-litre flat-six running on modern carburettors. Maintained throughout its ownership by a private racing workshop, the car has seen limited use but has been regularly serviced and recommissioned in preparation for the sale. Beyond its evident engineering quality, it is important to note that this prototype belongs to the highly sought-after category of unique competition cars built outside the framework of major manufacturers. Its original ONS passport, period photographs and extensive accompanying documentation allow its history to be traced with confidence. A rare survivor from the golden era of Interserie racing and German hillclimb competition, it represents a unique opportunity for collectors of historic prototypes and unusual competition machinery.
