Please note this vehicle is titled as 2006.

Given the almost universal critical acclaim that greeted the 550 Maranello, Ferrari naturally opted for evolution rather than a clean-sheet design when it came to devising a successor. The 575M Maranello of 2002 gained subtly tweaked styling inside and out, including aluminium headlight pods and a new dashboard layout, while the V-12 grew by 205 cc to 5.75 litres.

Once again following the path laid by the 550 with its open Barchetta Pininfarina counterpart, Ferrari then introduced a limited-edition drop-top version of the 575M. Christened the Superamerica, in turn reviving a name from the 1950s and early 1960s, the model featured an innovative rotating electric roof. The design employed a carbon fibre structure to support the glass panel, which could be tinted at the touch a button. Courtesy of that enlarged engine, which returned 533 horsepower and a top speed of 199 mph, the Superamerica could lay claim to being the fastest convertible in the world upon its launch in 2005.

From the limited-production run of just 559 examples of the Superamerica, the car offered here touts an incredibly desirable specification that promises to be as satisfying to drive as it is easy on the eye. Chassis number 144001 was among the small pool of only 43 cars to leave the factory equipped with a six-speed open-gate manual gearbox, as opposed to the electro-hydraulic Formula 1-style paddle-shift option. Furthermore, it was built by Ferrari to feature the HGTC (Handling Gran Turismo Competizione) package, which added carbon-ceramic brakes with red callipers sitting behind 19-inch split-rim wheels, a race-style titanium exhaust system, revised suspension, and a high-ratio steering rack.

Wearing beautiful Argento Nurburgring paintwork, this Superamerica was configured with a Nero interior housing matching-colour carpets and large-size racing seats finished in Connolly hide. Completing the superlative specification, carbon fibre trim was selected alongside Grigio Scuro stitching, a red tachometer, a high-power audio system, plus exterior Scuderia shields mounted on the front wings.

Imported by official marque dealer Kuwait Automobile & Trading Co, the Ferrari was delivered new to the Kuwaiti royal family in October 2005. Under the care of a second owner in the country, the Superamerica’s defining Revocromico roof was replaced and new electric motors installed by Ferrari of Kuwait in February 2017. The corresponding invoice, which is available to view on file, recorded the odometer at 5,068 kilometres.

Sparingly driven thereafter, this car has been registered in Switzerland since September 2022. Two years later, in March 2024, it was awarded prestigious Ferrari Classiche certification. Accordingly, the Superamerica heads to RM Sotheby’s Zurich sale accompanied by its important “Red Book”, which notes the presence of its matching-numbers engine. It displayed 7,437 kilometres on the odometer at the time of cataloguing.

Boasting a remarkable specification that’s equal parts rare and desirable—suitably fitting for royal first ownership—chassis 144001 stands as one of the finest examples of its breed. This Superamerica would therefore make for a magnificent addition to any stable of limited-production Prancing Horses.
