Introduced in 1968, the Ferrari 365 GTB/4—nicknamed “Daytona” in tribute to the American 24-hour endurance race, in which Ferrari achieved a storied 1-2-3 finish in 1967—instantly reinvigorated Maranello’s grand tourer line-up. Power came from a front-mounted 4.4-litre “Colombo” V-12 fitted to a five-speed manual transmission; and the visual appeal of the car was made to match, with modern bodywork designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti.

The Daytona made good on its nickname with stunning performance specifications. The Tipo 251 engine produced 352 horsepower, making for a sprint from 0-60 km/h in under six seconds and a 280 km/h top speed. Four-wheel independent suspension, disc brakes, and 50:50 weight distribution guaranteed excellent handling. The Daytona’s blend of power, luxury, and style proved intoxicating, and more than 1,300 GTB/4 Daytonas were built before production ceased in 1973. It is believed that between 400 and 500 “Plexi” versions were made by Ferrari. These were distinguished by their fixed-headlight Plexiglass nose panel that was eventually phased out in favour of pop-up headlights seen on later models.

Chassis number 13423, offered here, is a desirable “Plexi” Daytona model that is documented to have been completed by the Ferrari factory on 14 May 1970. The car was prepared by Maranello in Blu Dino exterior paint accented by a Perspex nose panel, complemented by a Nero Connolly leather interior. Original specification had the Ferrari configured in left-hand drive, with a wooden steering wheel, without headrests, and its instruments reading in miles. The units read in miles because the Daytona was set for first delivery to the United States.

In June 1970, the Ferrari was transacted by Luigi Chinetti Motors of Greenwich, Connecticut to its first owner, one Mr Scapula, an American resident of Geneva, Switzerland. The car was registered on the Swiss number plates “GE 53422”, yet its first owner temporarily took the car to the USA, allegedly only for around 12 months. A report by marque expert Marcel Massini notes that the car was seen with Mr Scapula at the 1970 United States Grand Prix held at the famed Watkins Glen race track in the state of New York; the race was held on 4 October 1970.Chassis 13423 soon returned to Switzerland and, by July 1971, it was noted to be back in the care of the Ferrari factory as part of the Assistenza Clienti programme in Modena. The following year, Mr Scapula took delivery of a 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider—also finished in Blu Dino—and traded this “Plexi” model to make the deal. Subsequently the Berlinetta found later ownership in England, where it was repainted yellow and retrimmed with a dark green leather interior.

By 1993 the car had been acquired by an Italian owner based in England, and it was reregistered with the number plate “FYY 248H”. This keeper enthusiastically showed the Ferrari at concours events and is known to have retained the car until at least the late 2000s. In July 2020, the Ferrari was noted to be offered for sale with a classic car dealer based near Lausanne, Switzerland, still painted yellow and with its green interior. In July 2022, the car gained important Ferrari Classiche certification. It is offered for sale with its important “Red Book”.

Retaining its matching-numbers “Colombo” V-12 engine and boasting Ferrari Classiche certification, this attractive “Plexi” Daytona model would be a standout participant at any concours or dedicated Ferrari event.
