Some cars you simply cannot ignore. You see them and think: this is it. The ultimate fusion of form and function. The Porsche 911. The Golf GTI. The Mazda MX-5. Classic cars that earn their legendary status through a perfect balance of driving pleasure, usability, and timeless design. And then there's the Fiat Panda 4x4.

I can hear you thinking: a Panda? In that company? Yes. Absolutely. And if you don't get it, you've probably never driven one.

The Panda 4x4 is a car Giorgetto Giugiaro penned in 1980 with a single brief: make it as cheap and simple as possible, but still fun. The result was a box on wheels that looked as though a child had drawn it with a ruler. Straight lines, flat glass, a dashboard consisting of one continuous tray holding everything you need and nothing you don't. The Panda was functional minimalism before that became a marketing term.

But the real magic happened in 1983, when Austria's Steyr-Puch was brought in to add four-wheel drive. The same Steyr-Puch that built the Mercedes G-Class. They took the little Panda, gave it an extra transfer case with low-range gearing, raised the ground clearance, and in doing so created one of the most capable small off-roaders ever made. A car weighing under 800 kilos with the climbing ability of a mountain goat and the fuel consumption of a moped.

I remember driving somewhere in the Italian Alps years ago, heading for some mountain village where they'd never heard of espresso machines. The road grew narrower, steeper, and at some point the tarmac disappeared entirely. Next to me a Range Rover sat stuck, wheels spinning in the gravel, too heavy and too wide for the cart track winding uphill. And who came past? A local farmer in an olive-green Panda 4x4, waving casually, cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth. That car went places where SUVs costing three times as much can only dream of going.

Anyway, back to the Panda offered here. This example originally hails from Germany, where it was delivered in December 1988 by Auto Thiel in Rüdesheim am Rhein, a little town on the Rhine, famous for its vineyards and tourist boats. The service booklet shows the delivery inspection, the first service at 1,500 kilometres, then services at 8,377 and later 18,900 kilometres. All neatly stamped, exactly as the Germans like it.

Via Italy, where it spent most of its life, this Panda eventually arrived in the Netherlands in 2024. The 1000 I.E. KAT designation tells you it has the fuel-injected engine with catalytic converter, good for 44 bhp. Sounds like nothing, but remember the entire machine weighs under 800 kilos. The power-to-weight ratio is comparable to many a modern city car, only here, every horsepower feels ten times as present.

The colour is green. Not British Racing Green, not metallic pine-forest green, just green. Panda green. The sort of green you associate with military vehicles, park rangers, and people doing serious work. The interior is leather, which in a Panda means the seats are upholstered rather than you sitting in a Bentley. That's precisely the charm.

On the wheels are Pirelli winter tyres. Not because someone thought, let's fully spec this car out, but because a Panda 4x4 on winter tyres in the mountains is exactly what this thing was made for. It's almost poetically correct.

And yes, this Panda has lived. Six owners, a good 131,000 kilometres, and here and there you'll see the traces. This is not a showroom car, nor should you want it to be. It's a working tool that happens also to be a design icon, a capable off-roader, and a car with more character per square centimetre than anything in the modern Stellantis catalogue.

Over recent years the Panda 4x4 has grown into a true cult car. Enthusiasts from around the world seek them out, restore them, and drive them to places you'd never take your company SUV. Not because you have to, but because you can. Because the Panda 4x4 invites you to have adventures you'd otherwise never experience.

Some cars are timeless. This one is timeless and time-tested.
