Why on earth am I so besotted with Alfa Romeo, along with countless others? It's a question I ask myself regularly, usually while standing at the roadside with smoke billowing from the engine bay or a dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree. The answer is as simple as it is inexplicable: because these are the only cars that make you feel truly alive. Not that you're driving from A to B, not that you're being efficient, but that you're actually doing something. Something with feeling, with passion, with a hint of Italian madness.

The Alfasud is perhaps the ultimate proof of that thesis. A car that was already rusting in the brochure, as the connoisseurs among us know. A car born from crisis, built in a brand new factory in Pomigliano d'Arco, deep in the south of Italy. It was the seventies, Alfa Romeo needed to reach the masses, and engineer Rudolf Hruska was given carte blanche to design something completely new. Front-wheel drive. A boxer engine. MacPherson front suspension. Disc brakes all round. For 1972, this was nothing short of revolutionary in this segment.

The Ti, added to the range in 1973, was the spicier variant. Ti stands for Turismo Internazionale, a badge Alfa had used for decades to indicate there was just a bit more punch in the engine, just a bit more sportiness in the chassis, just a bit more intent in the whole package. The 1.2 Ti delivered 68 bhp from that characteristic 1186cc boxer engine. Sounds like nothing by today's standards, but in a little car weighing under 900 kilograms dry, with 58/42 weight distribution and a centre of gravity so low you practically scrape the tarmac, it's more than enough to plant a permanent grin on your face.

I don't know what the Italian is for oversteer, but it doesn't appear in the Alfasud's dictionary. These cars turn in. Always. With a precision you wouldn't expect from something out of Naples. The steering is direct, the pedal placement invites heel-and-toe (provided you're not a size 12, otherwise you risk pressing all three pedals at once), and that little boxer engine sounds like a cross between an angry hornet and a sewing machine on amphetamines. BRRWWAAAAARARRR through the first three gears, then slot it into fourth on that lovely five-speed box, and savour that specific Alfasud sound that could come from nowhere else.

Right, back to the Alfasud in question. This example in Bianco Capodimonte dates from September 1974 and was delivered new in Milan. The first owner was one Anna Maria Adorni, a lady born in 1910, residing on Viale Bianca Maria. A street that still exists, is still rather smart, and where you'd still expect to see cars like this. The car has had only one other owner since, which for a fifty-year-old Alfasud is quite remarkable.

The Ti specification means this Alfasud left the factory with the sporting instrumentation, the chunky three-spoke sports steering wheel, the sports seats, and that lovely five-speed gearbox that was optional on the standard Sud. The rev counter sits prominently in view, precisely where it belongs, and the entire dashboard breathes that typical seventies Alfa atmosphere of functional sportiness.

The Alfa Romeo Alfasud we are offering is a 1974 Alfasud 1.2 Ti that has been preserved in original condition. The car was professionally resprayed once in the past, but for its age, aside from a few minor repairs over the years, it remains in tidy condition.
The interior is exceptionally handsome and shows virtually no wear. Everything breathes 1974. The odometer reading of 31,553 km is therefore entirely plausible when you see and experience the overall state of the car.
What makes this Alfasud extra special is the accompanying history. There is still an original inspection document from the Milanese testing authority, including the details of the first owner, born in 1910. She bought the car new in 1974 and continued to have it inspected until 2009. That alone makes this example unique. In 2017, with an odometer reading of 28,592 km, the car was acquired by a Belgian Alfa Romeo collector, from whom we have now obtained it.
As an additional detail, the original Dutch brochure for the Sud Ti from 1973 is also included. A wonderful piece of period ephemera that fits this car perfectly.
This is not a restored Alfasud, but an honest, well-preserved 1.2 Ti with a remarkable story and a rarely seen low mileage. A car for the true enthusiast who appreciates originality and history.

This is not a car for someone seeking a trouble-free daily driver. This is not a car for someone who values modern conveniences, reliability, or resale value calculations. This is a car for someone who understands what Alfa Romeo means. Who grasps why we, the believers, keep coming back to this marque despite everything. Who knows that the Alfasud is perhaps the most important Alfa of the post-war era, the model that kept the brand alive when the financial storm clouds were gathering.

"You can't be a true petrolhead until you've owned an Alfa Romeo," Jeremy Clarkson once said, and he was right. But I'd go one step further: you're only truly lost to the marque once you've had an Alfasud. Once you've experienced how such a small, light, perfectly balanced thing dances through corners. Once you've heard that boxer sing at six thousand revs. Once you've understood why Italians build cars with their hearts rather than with a spreadsheet.

Anna Maria Adorni of Milan knew it. The second owner knew it. The question is whether you know it too.
