Maserati's Khamsin (named after a hot Sahara Desert wind) first appeared at the 1972 Turin Show and entered production in 1974. Styled and built at Bertone, and designed by the legendary Marcello Gandini, the front-engined Khamsin featured all-independent, double-wishbone suspension similar to that of the mid-engined Bora and Merak, while its 50/50 weight distribution allowed for near-perfect balance. Citroën's hydraulic technology (as found in the Maserati-engined Citroën SM) was employed to power the brakes and steering, as well as to raise the concealed headlamps. The power unit is a 4.9 litre version of Maserati's quad-cam V8 developing 320bhp at 5,500rpm, while the five-speed manual gearbox meant that the Khamsin was able to reach 150mph in period. While production ceased in 1982, the Khamsin today is extremely evocative of the 'wedge-shaped' supercars of the 1970s, and of the late great Gandini's legendary eye for design.

This rare matching-numbers Khamsin is one of just 70 right hand drive examples and was in the care of our vendor for 25 years until he passed away earlier this year. There have been a mere four owners over the past 49 years, with its previous keeper owning the car for 16 years. Garage-stored, our vendor was unable to use the car for several years for health reasons, hence its present condition. The car is, however, sound overall we believe, with satisfying door slams, the leather interior remaining in fair condition and the boot struts operating as expected. Included within the history file are invoices totalling more than £28,000, primarily from marque specialist McGrath Maserati, as well as numerous previous MoT test certificates and tax discs.

While this Khamsin will require full mechanical recommissioning and some cosmetic reconditioning to restore it to its former glory, it nevertheless represents the start of an exciting project, offering collectors and enthusiasts a rewarding opportunity to bring it back to life. Once completed, it will doubtless be featured on Concours lawns around the country, as these rare 70s supercars continue to climb in value. Consigned by Charlie McCreery

Interested parties should note that this Maserati will require full recommissioning and cannot be driven away from the auction.

Interested parties should note that the cherished registration plate 'JAZ 1519' is included with the car.
