Beschreibung

This Ford Escort Mexico was completed in July 1971 and first registered that August, as one of just 17 competition-prepared examples built and supplied by Ford's Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) to Ford France for the 1971 Tour de France Automobile, and this particular car — finished in a striking Maize Yellow — was campaigned by Andre Gaudry and Michel Dupard of Journal du Centre.

After the Tour, the cars came back to Britain to take part in the celebrated Jack Brabham Trophy for Formula 1 Team Managers at Brands Hatch on 24th October 1971. For this event, the Escort was handed to Max Mosley — founder of March Engineering and future FIA President — who competed against a formidable lineup that included Jack Brabham, John Surtees, Colin Chapman, Frank Williams and Ken Tyrrell.

The race carried an extra layer of prestige, as several Formula One drivers took turns holding pit boards for the competing team managers. Mosley's own signalling was handled by Ronnie Peterson, and he went on to finish an impressive fifth, trailing only Brabham, Surtees, Chapman and Williams.

After Brands Hatch, the fleet of Escort Mexicos was sold off individually, with many entering the 1972 Mexico Challenge or various rally campaigns. Consequently, very few have survived intact, and this example is thought to be one of only four still in existence. It comes with a comprehensive history file, including original entry lists and race reports that support its remarkable provenance.

Offered from private ownership and presented in excellent condition, this car is far more than simply an early Escort Mexico. With genuine factory competition history, a place in the 1971 Tour de France Automobile, and a direct link to Max Mosley, it ranks among the most significant surviving examples of the model — and a fitting addition to any serious collection. Consigned by Charlie McCreery
