Beschreibung

The 1922 Norton 16H 500cc SV is a wonderful example of the practical engineering that established Norton as one of Britain's leading motorcycle manufacturers. Built during a period when motorcycles were becoming increasingly reliable and affordable, the 16H was the top sports model of the day and period Norton catalogues advertised it as the fastest 500cc in production. Designed to be a dependable machine, the 1922 version introduced adjustable valve tappets, a welcome improvement that made routine maintenance much simpler.

Powered by a 490cc air-cooled side-valve (SV) single-cylinder engine with a bore and stroke of 79 × 100 mm, the 16H featured a three-speed Sturmey-Archer gearbox, hand gear change, chain final drive, and a rigid frame with Druid front forks. Producing around 11–12 horsepower, it was capable of 110-120km/h in the right hands.

This particular 1922 16H is said to have been raced in period, but unfortunately this cannot be verified. The bike is fitted with a superb Brown & Barlow Sports carburettor with enormous straight inlet tract and a Sturmey Archer 3 speed with hand/knee gear change and C.R. (Close Ratio) stamped on top of the housing. Furthermore a lovely CAV magneto is fitted.
The 16H weighs less than 100kilos (standard was 252lbs or 114kilos) so some weight has no doubt been shaved off compared to a standard 16H.

During a major recent service, the CAV magneto was rebuild and the manual oil pump refurbished while new tyres and tubes were fitted. In the last month it participated in a couple of vintage rallies without any problems.

The success of the 16H laid the foundation for one of the longest-running motorcycle models in British history, remaining in production until 1954 and becoming famous as the British Army's standard dispatch motorcycle during the Second World War.

Today, the 1922 Norton 16H flat tanker is admired by collectors not only for its historical importance but also for its uncomplicated design and enduring character.

The 16H is registered on Danish (EU) registration documents and is ready to be enjoyed on the road.
