Appropriately for a Speedster—a model conceived for the North American market with great input from New York importer Max Hoffman—this early Porsche 356 was delivered to The Big Apple on 28 October 1955. According to a letter from Porsche France (available to view on file), the car was built in a transitional period so pairs a Pre-A chassis with a 356 A type-616/1 flat-four engine. It is thought to be one of between 200 and 250 examples of the rare “transition” model. Chassis number 80994 was, per a copy of its Kardex sheet, configured in White over a Red vinyl interior and featured sealed-beam headlights.
Believed to have resided on the west coast of America until mid-1998, this Speedster moved specifically to California prior to being restored by marque specialist Andy Anderson between 1999 and 2001, at which point many original features were retained. Changed at this time to its current colour combination of silver over dark green, the Porsche was sold by Anderson to Mr Tom Duffy of Los Gatos. The car remained in the United States through to 2009, at which point it was exported to the United Kingdom. It was then acquired by the France-based consigning owner in February 2017.
Significantly retaining its matching-numbers engine and refinished in a desirable colour combination, this 356 Pre-A would make for an attractive addition to any collection.
