Beschreibung
The 1931 Auburn 8-98A Cabriolet emerged during a golden era of American automotive design, when manufacturers like Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg, under the vision of E.L. Cord, sought to combine luxury, performance, and advanced engineering at a price that defied the Depression-era odds. Auburn had made a name for itself by offering stylish, high-quality vehicles at a value, and by 1931, the company was refining its lineup with sharper styling and improved mechanicals. The 8-98A represented one of Auburn's most appealing offerings, pairing a rakish convertible body with the proven Lycoming straight-eight engine.
Rated at 98 horsepower, the Lycoming eight gave the 8-98A spirited performance, and when coupled with Auburn's distinctive styling, complete with dual side-mounted spares, flowing fenders, and a folding soft top, the car was an undeniable standout. The design was heavily influenced by Chief Stylist, Alan Leamy, who brought a flair to Auburn's lineup that rivaled far more expensive marques. Auburn's focus on color, chrome, and proportion made even their most affordable models look far more costly than they were.
The 8-98A Cabriolet offered the freedom of open-air motoring with the practicality of roll-up windows and a snug-fitting convertible top. It was positioned as a car for the stylish professional or upwardly mobile family, delivering impressive value without compromising on elegance or engineering. The robust chassis and reliable drivetrain made these cars both drivable and durable, which helps explain why they remain popular with collectors today. In an era when many automakers were retreating or folding entirely, Auburn charged ahead with bold styling, strong engines, and unbeatable pricing. The 1931 Auburn 8-98A Cabriolet exemplifies the brand's brief but brilliant high point, an affordable luxury car that continues to captivate enthusiasts with its Art Deco charm.
Offered in a highly attractive polychrome red livery, this 1931 Auburn 8-98A Cabriolet is well known among the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club faithful and has been lovingly cared for and expertly restored. Known in the collector car hobby as "The McCleary Special," this Auburn was purchased by William E. McCleary on October 8th, 1988, from a long-term California-based owner. Under McCleary's care, he commenced a comprehensive concours level restoration that was completed in 1995. Every nut and bolt were tended to, resulting in a stunning outcome. Under his care until 2023, through the years he decided to improve its touring capabilities. Not changing its originality, as it still retains its original engine, chassis, and coachwork, he installed power steering, the brakes were converted to hydraulic with a dual master cylinder, twin Stromberg carburetors were added for extra horsepower, and an electric fan for cooling. Retaining its original looks, all the touring upgrades are concealed under the hood. Features that further this Auburn's beauty include desirable Trippe dual fog lights, color-matched wire wheels, dual side-mounted spares, and a nicely fitted black convertible soft top.
A participant in several ACD Club and CCCA events and tours, this special 8-98A Auburn stands ready to be further enjoyed on various noted events. Well known in the collector car hobby and under the stewardship of its long-term owner who commenced the concours level restoration, this Auburn would be a delightful example to show off in one's collection or at future Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club and other classic car events held around the globe.
