With the Type 170 S, Daimler-Benz presented for the first time after the war a special class car. The new model was unveiled to the public together with the 170 D in May 1949 at the Technical Export Fair in Hanover. Like the 170 D, the new flagship of the passenger car range was not purely a post-war design; rather, the 170 S was based on the pre-war Type 230 (W 153) in terms of style and concept. Compared to the 170 V, the 170 S had a more powerful engine, an improved front axle and a more spacious body. In addition to the saloon, a two-seater Cabriolet A and a four-seater Cabriolet B were available. The Cabriolet A was considered a particularly luxurious vehicle for the most discerning customers at the time and rounded off the production range at the top end. According to its registered stock number the Cabriolet B on offer – one of 1’603 vehicles built – was delivered to Switzerland and was first registered in 1950. The early history of the Mercedes is unknown until it was completely restored by an enthusiast about 25 years ago. After his death a few years later, the pretty convertible was taken over by the vendors family in 2012. Unfortunately, the bereaved had carelessly disposed of all the documentation relating to the restoration in the meantime. After the takeover, the 170 S got a MOT as a veteran car for the first time in June 2012 and then used occasionally for the first few years – around 2’500 km have been covered since then. The Mercedes has spent the last three years in a garage and has not been driven. The rare convertible is currently in good to very good condition, but due to its long period of inactivity, a service is recommended. The most recent veteran MOT has been carried out in April 2022.
