ALPINA Limited Edition No. 29
Unveiled at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW Z1 was a bold leap into the beyond, with "Z" standing for Zukunft-German for future. Designed by Harm Lagaay, the Z1 featured innovative vertically retracting doors and removable thermoplastic body panels. These panels allowed color changes or even driving without them. Its high side sills, like the Mercedes 300 SL's, ruled out conventional doors, enhancing the open-air roadster experience and laying the foundation for future Z-series cars.
Between July 1990 and September 1991, only 66 ALPINA Roadster Limited Edition (RLE) models were built based on the innovative BMW Z1. Naturally, ALPINA enhanced the Roadster with exclusive styling, characteristic side-stripes, and 20-spoke wheels. Of course, the company that integrates both a carburetor and crankshaft into their logo would offer more than the standard BMW engine under the hood. Each of the 66 RLEs produced would feature a 200-cc displacement increase, Mahle cast pistons, revised camshafts, and a special ALPINA machined cylinder head. With these modifications horsepower increased by 30, for a total of 200 and with an impressive 261 nm of torque. Each car came with bespoke details with the serialized ALPINA Limited Edition number appearing on the hand-stitched leather MOMO steering wheel horn button, wheel center caps, and limitation plaque. Perhaps most impressive: the ALPINA Roadster Limited Edition retailed at 116.000 DM eclipsing the Z1 by nearly 40-percent. In fact, it was even more costly than a BMW M5 and M635 CSi!
This Top Red ALPINA, complete with the iconic gold ALPINA decals on the sides, is limited edition number 29 of the 66 produced in Buchloe, Germany. This rare RLE was sold through Nicole Automobiles, the sole official ALPINA importer in Japan, to its first owner in Fukuoka. Already an exclusive car, the limited number of RLEs sold through Nicole were adorned with wheel arches as an exclusive styling element to visually accentuate the performance improvements made by ALPINA making them even more exclusive. Upon import to the Netherlands in 2017, it is noted the car held only two Japanese owners who took fastidious care of this special car. With under 30,000 kilometers at the time of cataloging, this rare ALPINA remains in excellent original condition. Numerous factory-applied finishes and decals can be found throughout the car, and it is furnished with its numbered ALPINA book and Alpina Handbooks. With the brand from Buchloe now firmly under the BMW umbrella, this well cared for Roadster Limited Edition stands as both fascinating piece of ALPINA history and a well-cared-for example offered in its sensational original color combination.
