"DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES BEYOND OUR CONTROL, THIS LOT HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN FROM THE AUCTIONBuilt for BMW by Karmann in 1968 and produced until 1975, named internally as the BMW E9, the first model of BMW’s new coupé was the 2800 CS which replaced the earlier 2000 C and 2000 CS coupé models. The 2800 CS used the 2788cc version of the engine used in the E3 sedans and produced 170hp, they were replaced by the 3.0 CS and 3.0 CSi in 1971. The engine had been bored out to give a displacement of 2,986, it was offered with twin carburettors in the 3.0 CS which produced 180hp, or with fuel injection in the 3.0 CSi which produced 200hp. Performance of both the 3.0 CS and 3.0 CSi was very competitive compared with contemporaries.
Supplied new to South Africa, we are informed this rare righthand drive 3.0 CSi had only three private owners from new, the last of whom enjoyed it for many years before the car was sold to our vendor in the UK. Imported into the UK in March 2016, upon arrival the car required restoration and between 2016 - 2019 it was totally restored. The vendor's team works on all types of high-end classics, and this BMW was stripped back to a bare shell with all parts either cleaned or replaced before reattachment. Repainted red at some time, during the extensive restoration glimpses of the original Taiga Green paint were found and it was decided, as this is the holy grail of BMW E9 colours, to take the car back to this original colour. Following a rebuild of the body the car looks stunning. The chromework has been refurbished, and door seals and window seals replaced, while the headlights and indicator lenses are brand new.
The interior has been retrimmed in factory-correct black leather and the headlining and carpets renewed. The engine had been rebuilt, with components refurbished or replaced, resulting in a clean and bright engine bay. Suspension components have been renewed including shock absorbers, balljoints, rubber bushes and complemented by new brake calipers, discs, and pads all round. The factory-correct BBS 14 wheels are wrapped in new tyres and have been refurbished. Indeed, this car is as clean underneath as it is on top. This CSi also benefits from a rare five-speed gearbox that we are informed was fully rebuilt by a BMW specialist in 2019 and has factory extras from new which included the City Pack, electric windows, power assisted steering, and a (factory) electric sunroof.
The vendor states that this is a matching numbers example and that the mileage of 41,600 is correct, as warranted by the previous owner in an accompanying letter to our vendor. The first owner in South Africa had owned the car from new before passing it to his son. The son swapped the car for a small fishing boat after his father passed away with Jerome the third owner, who our vendor purchased the car from. The car stood for some years after, but he recommissioned the CSi and used it sparingly always hopeful he would have the time to fully restore the car himself.
Years went by and the car became his wife’s car, eventually spending less time on the road the decision was made that it was time for four-door car lead to the necessity to sell. The letter, from Jerome, owner of over 20 years, which was sent to our vendor last year details the usage and low mileage journeys is a lovely piece of provenance accompanying the car.

With its restoration completed and an MoT test certificate until June 2020 (a new MoT will be offered for the sale), this CSi looks stunning and is a credit to the restoration team. The car is supplied with countless photos and invoices in the accompanying file which documents the restoration that we are told cost in excess of £50,000. Presented in this iconic colour, few could doubt its desirability."
