Beschreibung

GENERAL

The Mercedes 230 SL was first shown at the Geneva car show in 1963 as the successor of the 190 SL and 300 SL.
Its sleek body was styled by Paul Bracq and featured a vaulted hardtop that was thaught to resemble the roofs on East-Asian pagoda’s, hence the sobriquet.
The Pagode quickly became one of those truly iconic cars from the 60ies, with notable owners such as John Travolta, Sophia Loren, Priscilla Presley and most famously, John Lennon.
The car presented here is in good overall condition, but it could use some attention from a classic car enthusiast to restore its glory.
The car was put into storage for several years, but was started recently without any problems, running very smoothly.
This 230 SL, the first out of three SL series, was built in 1964 and thus qualifies to participate in practically all historic rallies.

EXTERIOR

This 230 SL is presented in flower white and features a black Pagode-hardtop.
The paintwork is quite old and shows some blemishes here and there. A perfectionist would renew the paintwork.
It could also be kept as is, since the paint work gives the car a lot character. All mounted parts are in place.
The chrome work isn’t perfect, but also shows a lovely patina.
This car is either a very good basis for a renovation or could be enjoyed right away in its current condition.

INTERIOR

The classic red interior could very well be the original one.
As far as we can see, the fabrics coincide with the original type of upholstery and the perforation in the seats.
All trimmings are all very neat and can be perfectly used in their current condition.
All mounted parts and instruments seem to be present. However, we cannot say with certainty if all of them still function.
The carpets could do with some mending, or can be replaced alltogether.

ENGINE

The 2,308 cc (2.3 L) M127.II inline-six engine was based on Mercedes-Benz' venerable M180 inline-six with four main bearings and mechanical Bosch multi-port fuel injection.
Mercedes made a number of modifications to boost its power, including an increased displacement and a completely new cylinder head with a higher compression ratio (9.3 vs. 8.7), enlarged valves and a modified camshaft.
Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut demonstrated the capabilities of the 230 SL on the tight three-quarter mile Annemasse Vétraz-Monthoux race track in 1963, where he put up a best lap time of 47.5 seconds vs. 47.3 seconds by Grand Prix driver Mike Parkes on his 3-liter V12 Ferrari 250 GT.
The engine in this example starts and runs quite smoothly. It could use a quick check-up, as it has been into storage until recently.

BODY

The underside of the body and the chassis require some attention. Some welding needs to be done.
