The success of the Mk VI and R Type prompted Bentley to pursue its post war policy of producing standard factory built coachwork with the introduction of the all new S1 saloon in early 1955. John Blatchley who was chief designer at this time was given the task of styling the new coachwork; the final result being met with wide approval. The new offering from Bentley was larger in size than its predecessors but is still considered to be one of the most elegant and balanced models ever produced. The Continental series cars were produced in conjunction with the factory built cars, but there were also come coachbuilt options available on standard chassis S Types, with Chassis No B140BA being one of these examples. It is one of twenty six cars built to Design No B10 by James Young, all of which were right hand drive motor cars. It was originally finished in velvet green with grey leather and was supplied by Jack Barclay Ltd to its first owner Mr Arthur Holmes of Harrogate in November of 1958. It was then purchased by Captain R.P. Phillips is 1960 and by John Matthey and Co in late 1963. Chassis No B140BA was then exported to the United States and remained there until 1989 when purchased and repatriated by Mr Peter Channing. The car was dispatched to Wildae restorations upon its return to the UK where it was comprehensively restored, with the work completed in 1992. The nut and bolt restoration cost in excess of seventy thousand pounds at the time. Since then the car has been well maintained and enjoyed. It comes fitted with air conditioning, complete tools and its extensive history file contains copy chassis cards, historical correspondence, and details of the restoration with invoices and photographs present. This handsome coachbuilt Bentley still presents and drives beautifully, testament to the quality of the restoration works carried out.
