A genuine, two-owner California car with lots of provenance

The question of how to tempt new customers into Porsche ownership has always been problematic. On the one hand, you're trying to uphold the reputation of the company as a purveyor of high-quality, high-performance sports cars while on the other, you're anxious not to alienate those potential customers whose budget won't stretch to a new 911.

In 1964, Porsche had just such a problem with the sales of their new 911 proving a touch disappointing and continuing demand for the 356, which was scheduled to be phased out, necessitating that the production lines kept rolling. The solution seemed to be financial, and the decision was made to replace the 356 with a four-cylinder, more appropriately priced 911 and, as a result, the 912 (initially 902) was conceived. First available to European customers by June 1965 (initially with 1582 cc and 90bhp), the 912 soon became a market leader, particularly in the USA.1966.

This 1969, left-hand drive 912 was delivered new to America to join its first owner in California. In late 2003 it was purchased by our vendor who had been looking long and hard for a decent 912 without much success in the UK so moved his search to the dry state of California and luckily found what he was looking for. It had been kept garaged from new, which is obvious from the coachwork which is original and in very good condition with some minor imperfections in areas. It was resprayed in 2010 and the paintwork retains a decent shine. The engine is original and was rebuilt in 2005 and new Weber carbs were fitted in 2013. There are some areas of light surface corrosion visible in the engine bay but a few hours detailing would sort that out. We understand that the gearbox is original and in very good condition and the electrics all behave apart from the cigarette lighter which is not working.

We had a nice note from our vendor which we reproduce here.

"After much searching for a 912 in good condition in the UK I decided to explore overseas options and found an agent in California who specialised in locating and exporting classic cars. I confirmed the purchase with Stephen Inglis in November 2003. From information provided by Stephen, I learned that the car had only one owner from new and had been kept garaged in California since 1969. Mileage showed 61,797. The car was imported to the UK in February 2004 and I collected it on a trailer from Felixstowe docks. When I took ownership, the condition was good, but it looked tired. The engine ran OK and the bodywork had only minor spots of rust. The interior was in good order As a US import, the car needed some modification to the lights to enable UK registration. As I have limited skills in mechanics and maintenance, I took the car to a local Porsche specialist GCR Central for this work. I was impressed with their work and continued to use them for all maintenance and restoration work for the 14 years I have owned the car. A history of all work completed is enclosed. Major work included an engine rebuild in 2005, body repair to patches of rust under wheel arches & door edges and respray, including repainting of the Fuchs alloys in 2010 and new carburettors in 2013 ".

The car has covered 79,630 miles and overall is a really nice usable 912. The fact that is has been enjoyed by only two owners, one each side of the 'pond', makes it very appealing.
