The Model: One of the most impressive German sports cars to come to America in the early 1950’s was the might 300SL from Mercedes-Benz. Top importer Max Hoffman conveyed to the factory that a smaller, less expensive version of this legendary car, would generate strong sales in the USA. In less than five months, the prototype for the 190 SL was unveiled and as predicted, it was a success. Styling Many of the basic parts were sourced from other Mercedes models, such as the shortened chassis coming from the 180 sedan, which also contributed the front suspension, while the rear singl-ejoint swing axle came from the 220 series. Between May 1955 to the end of production in February 1963, a total of 25,881 examples were produced, and with only a few minor modifications along the way.
The Car: This bright red example has been given a full professional restoration and is presented with both the removable hardtop as well as a tan soft top. From outside the sheet metal is in perfect alignment with proper gaps all around, and both doors open and close with little effort. The interior of the car is fitted in rich red leather seating with properly restored VDO gauges, in-dash clock and a period correct “High Fidelity” multi-band radio. Under the hood is in spectacular condition with the original engine fitted with the proper Solex carburetors that have been rebuilt to operate better than new. Lightly used since its restoration only the slightest of wear is detectable, while the exterior chrome and all of the glass are in show car condition. A turnkey ready example that is just begging to be taken out on the open road with you behind the wheel.
