In the early 1950s AC seemed doomed as a car maker because all it had were invalid carriages and an old fashioned two litre saloon and tourer which had beam front axles and an engine dating back to 1919. The company experimented with a number of horizontally-opposed engines, but none saw production. As it seemed that AC would fade, John Tojeiro was meanwhile making chassis for a small number of customers. They were simple but effective ladder frames with independent front and rear suspension by transverse leaf springs and lower wishbones. AC''s own Allan Turner revised the body style, turning pretty into beautiful, and so the AC Ace was born.
