In the early 1950s AC seemed doomed as a car maker because all it had were invalid carriages and an old fashioned 2 litre saloon and tourer which had beam front axles and an engine which dated back to 1919. The company experimented with a number of horizontally-opposed engines, but none saw production.
As it seemed that AC would fade, John Tojeiro was making chassis for a small number of customers. One was bought by Cliff Davis who had a pretty barchetta body made for it after the style of bodies which Touring made for the Ferrari 166. Davis was immensely successful in British racing with his car and thought of putting it in to production, but AC beat him to it and bought the rights to the Tojeiro chassis.
