After the considerable world-wide success of the MGA, it was obvious that the MG’s successor would have a tough act to follow. Considerable development had gone into the new car which, unlike the MGA with its separate chassis, was to be of monocoque construction to enable production output to exceed the record 100,000-plus run of the MGA.
Designed in-house at MG, the new MG MGB was launched at the 1962 Earls Court Motor Show. Its appeal was instant, offering a huge increase in interior space while having overall dimensions less than those of the MGA. Power came from the tried and tested B Series four cylinder engine, though with strengthened bottom end and capacity increased
