It was Porsche's first production automobile. Production of this mighty legend started in 1948 at Gmünd, Austria, where approximately 50 cars were built. By the early 1950s the 356 had gained some renown among enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic for its aerodynamics, handling, and excellent build quality. The class win at Le Mans in 1951 was a factor. The date was 23 June 1951, and sixty race cars lined up at 16h00 for the start of the nineteenth running of the Le Mans 24 Hour race. Despite the difficult conditions in the race, the number 46 Porsche gave an exemplary account of itself, and over the 24-hour period the car ran without a hitch crossing the line in 20th place overall and first in the 751-1100cc class. Having covered a distance of 2840.65km, the French pairing of Auguste Veuillet and Edmond Mouche became the first racing drivers to successfully bring a Porsche race car across the finish line in the Le Mans 24-Hour race, averaging 118.36km/h for the distance. That year, just 30 cars out of the original 60 starters finished the race, as contestants endured rain for two-thirds of the race.

If someone were to make a list of the greatest race cars of all time, the Porsche 917 would almost certainly be on it. Our Porsche 917 Family poster features the Salzburg, Gulf, and Martini – three iconic cars that competed at Le Mans. The car gave Porsche its first overall wins at the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971, and became revered for its high power output with speeds in excess of 220mph. So iconic was it, that the car played a leading role in Steve McQueen’s 1971 film, ‘Le Mans’. To commemorate the 917’s place in automotive history, Automobilist has produced the “Porsche 917 Family” Collector’s Edition Design Poster, featuring the Salzburg, Gulf, and Martini –depicts three of the most successful – and most visually distinctive – 917s ever built and competed at Le Mans. To make this poster truly unique, it is embossed with a layer of silver foil, a tribute to the 917’s racing quality. Each officially-licensed poster is exclusively marked with a limited-edition production badge, ranging from 001 to 917.

Few cars are held in such high regard as the Ferrari 250 GTO. Created between 1962-1964 by a team led by Giotto Bizzarrini, each buyer of the 39 produced had to be personally approved by Enzo Ferrari – and today, the prestige has only intensified. Rather fittingly, the car is synonymous with one of the most famous races in history: the 24 hours of Le Mans. And in 1962, it dominated the leaderboard, which is why the race has become the subject of our poster. In order to do a car like this justice, we’ve used a luxurious, thick paper stock – and limited the production run, just like the 250 GTO itself. For all of our posters we use high quality off-set printing, premium paper, and vibrant color reproduction that stands the test of time – just like the cars themselves. Each one is limited and labeled with a special hologram sticker to denote its authenticity.
