In the early 1980s, McLaren needed a competitive turbocharged engine to compete with the likes of Brabham, Renault, and Ferrari in Formula 1. Given Porsche’s incredible success in endurance racing with turbocharged cars, McLaren chairman Ron Dennis inquired to see if the company would be willing to develop an F1 powerplant. Porsche agreed, but on the condition that Mr. Dennis find funding for the project. He next contacted Mansour Ojjeh, the head of TAG (Techniques d’Avant Garde), a private holding company that backed Williams Racing Formula 1 team, and Mr. Ojjeh agreed to fund the project as long as the engine would feature TAG branding. Thus was born one of the most important engines in Formula 1 history.

In only four full seasons, the TAG-Porsche TTE P01-type engine powered McLaren’s cars to three Drivers’ Championships, two Constructors’ Championships, and 25 wins from its 68 races. Capable of electrifying performance, the TTE P01 reportedly produced over 1,000 hp in qualifying trim.

This example is complete with air intakes, and was previously displayed in an Italian collection until it was acquired by the consignor. A fantastic opportunity to buy a rare part of Formula 1 history, this TTE P01 is a great conversation piece and a historic object of automotive art perfect for any collection.
