The Volkswagen Type 2 entered production on March 8th 1950 with a two panel windscreen, which has proved to be its major identifying feature ever since - known as the splitscreen, or ‘Splittie’ among modern fans, the model was produced until 1967 when it was replaced by the ‘Bay Window’ Type 2. Production was moved from Wolfsburg to the Hanover transporter factory in 1956. Like the Beetle, the first Transporters used an air-cooled four cylinder 'boxer' engine mounted in the rear. This received several upgrades over its life, from 1100 to 1200cc in 1953, and then to 1500cc in 1963.
The earliest versions produced until 1955 were often called the "Barndoor", because of the large rear engine cover, while the later versions had a slightly modified body, smaller engine bay, and smaller diameter wheels. Like all VW models the Type 2 was the subject of continual improvements and u-gr
