We have got another one in! A time capsule from South Germany. This Volkswagen T2 fire engine first saw service in 1977 as part of the Tettenweis voluntary fire corps near Passau. In line with good fire service tradition, an account of all trips was kept up from 2000 to 2017. During that time the car made 375 trips totalling less than 12,500 km. For those with a mathematical mind that is about 33.5 km per trip. It should come as no surprise that for the greatest part of its life the car spent its time in and around the village. The car was mainly used for promotional and training purposes. The T2 was a valued member of the corps and as such received perfect care. That care is immediately obvious from the moment you set eyes upon the vehicle. Other than a few minor blemishes the bodywork is still in very good shape. It has nice and thin, correctly aligned panelwork. The quality of the fire engine red paintwork is good. The white bumpers and chrome hub-capped black wheels provide a nice contrast. The car also has external warning lights, sirens and a roof rack. Inside the custom made wooden storage for fire service equipment jumps to the forefront. You won't need to get flustered when trying to use the equipment as instructions have been neatly printed on inside of the driver's door. In the heat of a raging fire, you will know exactly where everything is. The inventory was carried out by Paul Ludwig Bayreuth Feuerlösungsgeräte as confirmed by the presence of the factories sign including its year of build and chassis number. A lot of these workhorses have been lost over the years because they were either worn out, damaged or because at the time they did not appreciate these vehicles enough to properly care for them. Times have changed and today everyone knows that T2’s are very rare. Especially a low mileage one like this example with just over 25,000 km on the clock. This T2 has always been kept in the heated fire station and that has paid dividends. There is no rust whatsoever. Mechanically it is clear this T2 has been maintained to a very high standard. It is lovely to drive, the engine runs smoothly as does the manual 4-speed gearbox. This retired fire service chap deserves to be continuously be cherished.
