Recognised almost as readily as the immortal Beetle itself, and with a cult following all of its own, the Karmann-Ghia was, in its maker's own words: "A Volkswagen for people who can't stand the sight of a Volkswagen". Hand built by Karmann at its Osnabrück works, VW's top-of-the-range coupé married a modified export Beetle floor pan, running gear and engine/transmission package to stylish coachwork designed by Carrozzeria Ghia's Luigi Segre. The concept first appeared at the Paris Auto Show of 1953 and entered production in 1955 in 1,200cc form.

The Karmann-Ghia kept abreast of mainstream Beetle developments, gaining all-synchromesh transmission and progressively larger and more-powerful engines as time progressed. A cabriolet appeared in 1957 and in 1959 the car's front end underwent a subtle restyle with raised headlamps and enlarged nose intakes. The Karmann-Ghia was an immense success in the USA, where the majority of the circa 445,000 produced found homes.

This beautiful example was exported new to Japan and imported into Belgium in 2009. Restored in 2010-2011, it is described by the vendor as in generally very good condition, with '100%' engine and transmission. The car is offered with a dating letter, restoration invoices, Japanese and UK registration documents, technical inspection, and Belgian Carte Grise.

Presque aussi identifiable que l'immortelle Coccinelle elle-même, et avec son propre culte, la Karmann-Ghia était, selon les propres mots de son constructeur, « une Volkswagen pour ceux qui ne supportent pas la vue d'une Volkswagen ». Construite à la main par Karmann dans ses usines d'Osnabrück, le coupé haut de gamme VW associait un plancher export modifié, le moteur et la transmission de la Coccinelle à une élégante carrosserie dessinée par Luigi Segre de la Carrozzeria Ghia. Le concept fit sa première apparition au Salon de Paris de 1953 et entra en production en 1955 dans sa version 1 200 cm3.

La Karmann-Ghia subissait les mêmes modifications que la Coccinelle de série recevant une transmission entièrement synchronisée et des moteurs progressivement plus gros et plus puissants. Un cabriolet fut dévoilé en 1957 et en 1959 l'avant de la voiture reçut un subtil restylage, avec des phares un peu plus haut et des entrées d'air plus grandes. La Karmann-Ghia connut un immense succès aux États-Unis où la majorité des 445 000 unités produites trouvèrent preneur.

Ce magnifique exemplaire a été exporté neuf au Japon et importé en Belgique en 2009. Restaurée en 2010-2011, il est décrit par le vendeur comme étant en très bon état général avec un moteur et une transmission « 100% ». La voiture est vendue avec ses factures de restauration, ses papiers d'immatriculation au Japon et au Royaume-Uni, son contrôle technique et sa carte grise belge.
