Volkswagen’s sleek Karmann Ghia was first shown as a concept vehicle at the 1953 Paris Motor Show. Internally dubbed the Type 14, the design was penned by Ghia’s Luigi Segre, and put into production at Karmann coachworks. Following the rising standard of living in postwar Germany, the Karmann Ghia was more expensive to build and posed more production challenges than the Beetle, but the public’s response to the elegant coupe exceeded expectations. Lower, wider, and more luxuriously appointed than its progenitor, the model achieved global popularity, and was built from 1955 through 1974 in several different versions, with over 450,000 constructed in total, including Coupes and Cabriolets.
