Beschreibung
There is probably no other car that featured so frequently in local motoring magazines as the VW Beetle, despite the lack of major modifications or improvements. Year after year, the specialist magazines devoted many pages to reporting on even the smallest improvements, and even a minimal increase in engine capacity or a larger rear window resulted in a wealth of new test reports. It is therefore no wonder that the launch of the VW 1300 in 1965 attracted a great deal of interest, as this model saw an increase in engine power of almost 18 per cent. By the mid-1960s, the VW Beetle was, in fact, already almost a classic car, its design dating back to the pre-war years. However, mass production only really got underway after the Second World War; in 1946, a mere 1'000 Beetles had been produced. But things progressed rapidly, and by the mid-1960s, ten million Volkswagens had already rolled off the production line. The sales success could not, however, hide the fact that the competition in the 1960s had significantly more modern technology and better interior layouts to offer. Consequently, the advertising for the ‘new’ model in August 1965 promised numerous improvements. The most significant was, of course, the increase in engine capacity by 93 cc to 1'285 cc, which delivered a whopping six extra hp. The VW engine thus produced 40 hp at 4'000 rpm. A year after the launch of the VW 1300, Volkswagen raised the engine capacity once again; the Beetle was now also available as the VW 1500 with 44 hp. No sooner had customers become accustomed to the 1300/1500 duo than Volkswagen introduced further improvements in the summer of 1967. In August 1967, the faster Beetle models were fitted with new bumpers, larger rear lights and more raked headlights. Even from a distance, the new model could be distinguished from its predecessor. Behind the scenes, the new safety steering system provided the driver with significantly better protection in the event of an accident. In addition, a dual-circuit braking system was finally introduced. The VW Beetle 1300 on offer here, in the ‘Luxury’ specification, was originally delivered in Switzerland and was first registered on 26 September 1972. The early history of this charming little car is unknown until it was acquired from the seller at the end of 2022. From then on, the seller used the VW for occasional trips and ensured it received regular maintenance as well as a number of upgrades. In 2024, for example, the ignition distributor was overhauled, a new ignition coil, new ignition leads, new spark plugs and spark plug connectors were fitted, and the carburetor was replaced. In 2025, the seats were restored and reupholstered in leatherette, and the wheel rims were repainted. Due to a lack of space, the seller now wishes to part with his beloved Beetle. The car is in good condition and will be handed over to a new owner with its most recent veteran MOT completed in September 2026.
