In the mid-70s, the fashion for large, powerful and gas-guzzling sports cars seems to be declining, partly due to a certain oil crisis. So manufacturers had to adapt, and Volkswagen was one of the first to propose a new sports car philosophy. A major attraction at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Golf GTI 1.6 arrives on the market with the label of "Volkswagen's fastest ever". But the German automaker is still far from imagining that it has just uncovered the segment benchmark. Lightweight (only 810 kg) and lively with its 4-cylinder, 110-hp engine, Volkswagen is striking and gives ideas not only to the competition, but also to private tuners. Against all odds, Volkswagen France, in partnership with the German tuner Oettinger, will present a limited edition of its Golf GTI 1.6, which will be produced in 1,250 units, all dedicated to the French market. We are in 1981 and the tuning trend is slowly taking hold in France. From an aesthetic point of view, the differences are noticeable, with the installation of the BBS kit which was very fashionable at the time, the Golf GTI Oettinger will see accomplished sports car appendages pushing it on the wings but also at the front with a specific spoiler. Here and there, the "GTI 16S" or "16-valve" badges are proudly displayed on the exterior and inside the cabin, while the 14-inch ATS wheels finish distinguishing this limited edition. Quite an era!
The Golf Gti Oettinger that we present to you was put into on the road on December 04, 1981. It is equipped with the Oettinger Kit No. 342, which consists of a 16-valve cylinder head and brings the engine power to 136 hp. The performance is impressive even today, as the weight of the whole unit remains under a ton. This car has known only one region, Touraine, all its life. The first owner bought the Golf in 1981 in Tours and kept it until 2009. At this date the current owner is driving with another Golf Oettinger and meets the seller on the occasion of a classic car show. Funny coincidence, the latter tells him that he owns the same car and that he would be selling it! The deal will be done. The current owner, Mr L, a garage specialist in VW and Porsche, has been displaying his Oettinger in his showroom for 10 years. It will only come out very rarely and only in good weather. The odometer shows an original mileage of 154,000 km. The interior is the original one in very good condition and the paintwork, redone about 15 years ago, is still very nice. During the test drive the car proved to be very pleasant to drive. No parasitic noise and we feel a very homogeneous car. The engine works perfectly and has never been dismantled (the three numbers of the kit correspond) and delivers all its power in a magnificent sound. The technical control of less than 6 months is up to date and the Golf is ready for this summer's rides.
