In 1996, Volvo introduced a new high-performance Volvo 850 as a replacement for the hugely successful limited edition T-5R. Earlier, the company had decided that they would not produce a direct successor to the T-5R, but this was the era when Rickard Rydell, driving for Tom Walkinshaw Racing, was winning in the British Touring Car Championship and Volvos image suddenly became that of a serious performance car manufacturer and with the T-5's surprising sales success, they changed their minds and decided to develop a new high-performance model. The new car was based on the T-5R but with a number of improvements and was christened the 850 R. It was offered as either a saloon or in five-door 'Sport Wagon' form and featuring a 250bhp, 2.3-litre, 5-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual gearbox and a limited slip differential as standard, the turbocharged estate car could accelerate from 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds and reach up to 158 mph. This particular 850R Sport-Wagon was supplied new to Japan in right-hand drive form (as it is today) and arrived here in the UK in 2017. The car had recorded 53,000 km at that point and has now covered a further 14,000 km taking the total mileage to 67,000 km, or 41,000 miles.Superbly finished in Dark Olive Pearl, this well specified car is fitted with traction control, sports suspension with self-levelling rear shock absorbers, ABS, Cruise control, a Volvo Guard alarm with remote, front fog lights, electronic climate control, leather and Amaretta (suede) electric seats and steering wheel - both heated, a sunroof, 4 air-bags, and 17inch Volan wheels.Bought by rock legend and Jamiroquai frontman, Jay Kay, as part of his private collection, the Volvo benefited from some attention in March of this year. It was fitted with new CV boots, ABS sensors, cambelt, power steering rack, a new battery, and was fully serviced. Since then it has covered just a few hundred miles and is offered, ready to use, with a fresh MoT.The 850R Sport Wagon is probably the ultimate 'Q' car appearing to be a sensible practical estate car in a discreet shade of green metallic whilst being able to demolish 0-60 in just over six seconds and handle like a 'Touring Car'. The fact that it's also a rare and highly collectable classic just makes it all the more appealing.
