Beschreibung

In September 1960, Triumph began developing a new two-seat convertible. The new car was launched into the market as part of the successful TR series.

The car was designed by Italian designer, Giovanni Michelotti, and was based on a 948cc engine and the chassis of the Triumph Herald.
Nonetheless, a lot of adjustments were made. The engine capacity was increased to 1147cc, which produced 63hp. In addition, the rigidity of the chassis and bodywork was augmented considerably. Disc brakes became standard.

The ‘prototype’ has remained almost unchanged. After a brief development phase, the ‘Spitfire’ was introduced to the general public at the London motor show in October 1962.

Throughout the following years of its existence, the Spitfire evolved rapidly. The vehicle ‘grew’ both optically and mechanically.

The last series of the Spitfire received the addition ‘1500’, referring to the engine capacity. This latest version was available from December 1974 to August 1980 and was therefore the most developed version of the small sports car.

‘Collection by Vermant’ is proud to present to you this restored Triumph ‘Spitfire 1500’ from 1980, one of the last copies produced. Even though 77% of the vehicles were destined for the North American market, this is an original Belgian produced copy!

The car was delivered as new on 18 May 1980 to Mr T. Steyaert in Jette. The exterior was finished in ‘Vermillion Red’ and the interior got a black lining, finished with ‘Pied de poule’.
In August 1983, the car - showing a mileage of 40,000 km - was withdrawn from traffic only to appear again in May 2012.

A full nut and bolt restoration was started in April 2013, with no expense spared. The bodywork and chassis were completely dismantled, sandblasted, metallized and repainted. The vehicle was then rebuilt with new rubbers and chrome parts.

A major overhaul was carried out with the engine capacity increasing to +/- 1585cc, thus producing 90hp. An electronic ignition, fuel pump, stronger starter, etc. provide extra reliability. Changing gears is done by means of a 4-speed manual gearbox controlling the rear wheels.

Finally, the entire suspension and braking system was renewed and polyurethane bushings were used for better road holding.
Two years after the start of the restoration, the vehicle was put to use again.

Meanwhile, it has only covered 49,600 original kilometres (8,000 since its restoration) and the Spitfire is still in an exceptional new condition!
New SU carburettors were recently fitted to the car, as well as new spoke rims, a convertible top, etc.

This Triumph is supplied with a certificate of conformity, the original car registration certificate from the 1st owner, numerous invoices and a whole load of spare parts.
