A cult object for youngsters, bitter sobriety for the older generation. The Trabant is the 'people's car' of post-war communist East Germany, the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (GDR).

Production started in Zwickau in 1958, in the former Auto Union factory nationalised after the Second World War. The name was chosen a year earlier through a competition; on the one hand Trabant means 'buddy, companion', on the other hand the word 'Erdtrabant' ('satellite') refers to Sputnik, launched by the Soviet Union in 1957.

Although the car is given the nickname 'Trabi', it was more of a necessary means of transport for East Germans as Western cars were not allowed to be imported. The Trabant is a very simple car with a two-cylinder two-stroke engine, originally a prewar DKW design.

The power of the first Trabants is only 15 hp. However, the bodywork is from Duroplast, a type of plastic. Due to its low weight, this later model still achieves a top speed of 105 km/h with 26 hp.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Trabant gained cult status.

Naturally, this car has signs of wear throughout.
