With the introduction of World Rally Car regulations that widened the scope of permissible modifications in the Group A category, the Impreza World Rally Car was born. The special feature of this machine was a body fitted with a blister fender that only barely squeezed into the regulations governing the body of two-door vehicles. However, the most drastic changes were not to the body but in the area around the engine. The engine camshaft, cylinder port and combustion chamber were refined and the capacity of the intercooler was increased. Also, extensions were made to the exhaust manifold.
