After his world tour in a Citroën Traction in the 1980s, Eric Massiet, a tireless globetrotter, needed to embark on a new challenge, and so decided to undertake a world tour in a steam car! A 1922 Stanley was found and bought by a philanthropist automobile collector, Robert Sarailh and ATS, a manufacturer of bespoke lifts. The specificity of the car demanded a different approach and to get out of the classic plans, Eric Massiet decided to make an around world tour in 80 days, giving it the name "Trophileas" and baptizing the car as Passe-Partout. This trip was also an opportunity to highlight the rights of children with the logo "Jules Verne for children", so that two 14-year-olds, Caroline, from Nantes, and Pedro, from Lisbon, could accompany the tour.
The car was completely restored by the mechanics of Robert Sarailh, before its departure on June 27, 1992, from Nantes. The reliability of the burners remained an issue, and in the United States, Passe-Partout had problems that were never really solved. The organizer bought a school bus that served as a breakdown and towing vehicle. In Russia, a 4x4 of the Soviet army helped out, before the car was loaded on to a train in the heart of Siberia. But the stubbornness of the organizer overcame all the difficulties and the car got back to Nantes on time...
After the trip, Robert Sarailh located a steam car specialist to bring back the car to good functioning. He has sold the car in 2009 to an engineer, enthusiast of Stanley steam cars, who then completely restored the car and made it more reliable, improving the original system. Today in working order, this very original car gives the opportunity to experience a completely different and unusual driving style, in silence and accompanied by a cloud of smoke. The car's story, of course, makes this Stanley all the more fascinating.
